The diode laser is one of the most proven and effective methods for permanent hair removal. The laser light travels into the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, where the light energy turns into heat that disables the follicle’s ability to produce new hair.
Because the laser only works on hair in the active growth phase, and follicles move between different phases, a series of treatments is needed to reach every follicle at the right moment. Most people need around 6 to 8 sessions a few weeks apart for a lasting result. Polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS, is one of the most common hormonal conditions in women, and unwanted hair growth is one of the symptoms many find most frustrating. Preparation
Before your treatment
The right preparation is decisive for both the result and the safety of a laser treatment.
- Shave the area 24 hours before your treatment, the hair should be gone from the surface but the follicle intact
- No waxing, plucking or threading for 4 weeks before the treatment, the laser needs the root in place to work
- Avoid sun and sunbeds for 2 weeks before the treatment, tanned skin increases the risk of pigment changes
- Come with clean skin, no lotion, cream or makeup on the area to be treated
- Tell us about any medication, skin conditions or allergies, some medicines make the skin light sensitive
- After the treatment: avoid sun, sunbeds, sauna, hot showers and hard exercise for 48 hours, and use high-factor sun protection on treated areas exposed to the sun
- If the skin feels warm afterwards, a calming lotion or pure aloe vera helps, though it is rarely needed
- Between treatments: shave rather than wax or pluck, so the follicles are still there for the next session
The skin can be slightly pink and feel warm straight after the treatment, that is normal and settles within a few hours.

Will the laser suit my skin and hair type?
The laser seeks out the pigment in the hair, so dark hair responds best. Blonde, grey and red hair contains little pigment and responds less well, whatever the technology. When it comes to skin, SHR is considerably more forgiving than older lasers, and works year-round on naturally brown or dark skin tones too. At the first visit we always assess your skin and hair type and give you an honest prognosis for your result, not a standard answer.
Can I have laser treatment if I have dark skin?
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons we chose SHR. Because the energy is delivered gradually with many weak pulses instead of single powerful ones, and the sapphire tip cools the surface of the skin throughout the treatment, the risk of burns is significantly lower than with a traditional laser. The treatment can therefore be done year-round on brown and dark skin. The intensity is always set to your skin tone.
Can I have laser treatment if I am sunburnt or tanned?
No. Naturally dark skin is one thing, a fresh tan is another. The pigment is then active in the surface of the skin and takes up heat meant for the follicle, which increases the risk of both burns and pigment changes. Wait until the tan has faded completely, and avoid sun and sunbeds for two weeks before the treatment. Afterwards, use high-factor sun protection on areas exposed to the sun.
Is the result really permanent?
After a completed series of treatments, hair growth in the area is permanently reduced; the treated follicles do not produce new hair. Individual dormant follicles can be activated over time, for example through hormonal changes, and a single maintenance treatment a year is usually enough to keep the skin entirely smooth.
Why can I not wax or pluck before the treatment?
The laser works by heating the pigment in the hair root, and waxing and plucking pull the whole root out, leaving nothing for the laser to act on. So at least 4 weeks without waxing, plucking or threading before each treatment. Shaving is entirely fine, it only removes the hair at the surface and leaves the root intact.
I have PCOS, is laser still worth it?
Yes. For many people with PCOS, laser is one of the most effective parts of a long-term plan against unwanted hair growth, even if the journey is often longer than with ordinary hair growth. Expect more treatments, and that maintenance may be needed over time, since the hormones continue to affect the follicles.
