Skin health in Kungsholmen

Uneven skin tone, dark spots and discolouration are among the things we are asked about most, and also among the most rewarding to work with, when it is done properly. Dark spots can be caused by anything from sun and age to hormones, and different types need different treatment. That is exactly why the most important step towards a more even skin tone is to understand first what kind of pigmentation you have.

At Tota Estetiska Klinik in Kungsholmen, Stockholm, we work with several treatments that even out skin tone and fade dark spots, and we always begin with a consultation where we assess your skin and set out the right plan. Pigmentation is an area where the wrong treatment can do more harm than good, so an honest assessment first is always worth it.

Different types of pigmentation

"Dark spots" is an umbrella term for several different things, and they respond differently to treatment. These are the most common:

  • Sun damage and age spots: the brown spots that build up after years of sun exposure, often on the face, décolletage and hands. Among the most rewarding to even out.
  • Melasma: larger, usually symmetrical brown or greyish-brown patches, common on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. Often linked to hormones (pregnancy, the contraceptive pill) and can be aggravated by heat and sun. Melasma calls for particular caution, see below.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): dark marks left behind after acne, spots or other skin irritation. Common and treatable.
  • Generally uneven skin tone: an overall dullness and patchiness rather than individual spots.

The type you have decides which treatment suits you, and that is precisely why we always start with a consultation. If you want to go deeper, we have written a guide to the types of pigmentation, melasma, sun spots and PIH.

Start with a consultation, the most important step

Before we treat pigmentation we want to meet you and see your skin. During a consultation of around 30 minutes we assess what type of pigmentation you have, what is causing it and what can realistically be achieved, and set out a plan accordingly. You are not required to book any treatment, the consultation is without obligation.

Why does this matter so much with pigmentation in particular? Because pigment is tricky. The wrong treatment, for example too much heat or too strong a peel on sensitive melasma, can actually make the pigmentation worse instead of better. Skin treated the right way evens out, while skin treated the wrong way can react with more pigment. So the honest assessment is not a formality, it is the very key to a good result. We would rather promise a little and deliver it than promise the earth and put your skin at risk.

Our treatments for dark spots

Depending on the type of pigmentation you have, and what we conclude at the consultation, we may work with one or more of the following treatments. A combination over time often gives the best and most lasting result.

Microneedling with EPN

Microneedling wakes the skin’s renewal and over a course can even out pigmentation and improve skin tone, while electroporation drives nutrients down into the skin. A powerful choice for uneven skin tone and sun damage.

Bio microneedling (algneedling)

Bio microneedling is microneedling without needles, gentle skin renewal that gradually evens out pigment and tone, a good alternative for sensitive skin.

Chemical peel

A chemical peel exfoliates the outer layers of the skin and can fade superficial pigmentation and give a more even skin tone. The strength and type are carefully adapted to your skin, which is especially important with melasma. The peel can be done as part of our facials.

OxyGeneo

OxyGeneo exfoliates, oxygenates and nourishes, which helps create a more even, fresher and more radiant skin tone, a gentle treatment that suits most people.

Growth Factor Treatment

Growth Factor Treatment supports the skin’s renewal and recovery, which over time can contribute to a more even skin tone and texture, ideally combined with the other treatments.

At the consultation we put together the right treatment or combination for your pigmentation, at the right pace. An even skin tone is also one of the cornerstones of our work on long-term skin health, and is often part of a larger plan for skin rejuvenation.

Even, clear skin tone after pigmentation treatment

Sun protection, a condition for results

One thing is decisive for anyone treating pigmentation: sun protection. Pigment is built up by the sun, and without daily sun protection the spots will come back, however good the treatment. Think of sun protection as part of the treatment, not an extra. We go through the right protection and routine with you, so that the result you build actually lasts. Treatment without sun protection is like bailing out a leaking boat.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about dark spots in Kungsholmen

Can dark spots be removed completely?

Many dark spots, especially sun damage and age spots, can be faded considerably and sometimes almost entirely, while others, such as melasma, are more often kept in check and toned down than gone for good. The result depends on the type of pigmentation, your skin and whether you protect your skin from the sun. At the consultation we are honest about what is realistic for you.

Why do I have to have a consultation first?

Because pigmentation covers different conditions that need different treatment, and because the wrong treatment can make some types worse, melasma in particular. The consultation lets us see your skin, understand what is causing the pigmentation and choose the right route instead of guessing. That is what gives a good and safe result.

Can treatment make pigmentation worse?

Yes, unfortunately, if the wrong method is used on the wrong type. Aggressive heat or peeling on sensitive melasma can trigger more pigment. That is exactly why we always assess your skin first and choose a method that suits it. Our caution is there to protect your result.

How many treatments are needed?

Pigmentation fades gradually, so it is usually a course of several treatments rather than a single session, followed by maintenance and consistent sun protection. How many depends on the type and depth, and you get a plan at the consultation.

Do the treatments help with marks after acne?

Yes, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks left after spots, often responds well to treatments such as microneedling and chemical peels. If you also have active acne we look at the whole picture, see our page on the acne facial as well.

A more even, clearer skin tone starts with the right assessment. Book a consultation in Kungsholmen and we will look at your pigmentation and set out a plan that is safe and effective for your skin.
