How the treatment works
We whiten with MightySmile, a system built on a whitening gel combined with cold LED light. The gel is applied to the teeth, and the light starts the reaction in it. The lamp itself whitens nothing, and it gives off no heat either, it only activates the gel. That is why the treatment is gentle on the teeth despite being quick.
The whitening is divided into three ten-minute rounds. Between the rounds the gel is changed, so it works at full strength the whole way rather than losing power towards the end. The manufacturer states two to nine shades whiter, and where in that range you land depends entirely on how your teeth look when you arrive.
Discolouration from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco sits in the surface of the tooth and generally responds very well. Grey-toned discolouration, for example after certain medication, is more stubborn and may take more than one visit.
The gel, the rules and the enamel
The question we get most often is whether it is safe to whiten teeth outside dental care. The answer lies in the gel.
MightySmile’s whitening gel contains no hydrogen peroxide. During the treatment itself less than 0.1 per cent hydrogen peroxide is released, which is the limit that decides what may be used as a cosmetic product in Sweden and the rest of the EU. The system follows Swedish and European legislation and the Swedish Medical Products Agency’s rules for this type of product. The gel is also pH neutral, which is what decides whether the enamel is harmed: an acidic product does, a neutral one does not.
If you want a stronger whitening than that, dental care is the right route. Dentists may work with considerably higher concentrations, and for deeper discolouration that is sometimes required.
Who is teeth whitening for?
Most healthy adults can whiten their teeth without problems. The treatment is for you whose teeth have yellowed from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco or simply the years, the enamel thins with time and the natural shade darkens.
When you should wait
- If you are being treated for a root canal or have cavities: finish with the dentist first. Whitening a tooth that has not been fully treated is neither comfortable nor sensible.
- During pregnancy, breastfeeding and chemotherapy there is no documented risk, but we follow the precautionary principle and wait.
- We do not whiten the teeth of anyone under 18.
- If you have ongoing gum problems, they should be investigated first.
It does not whiten everything
The whitening only affects your own teeth. Crowns, veneers and fillings keep the colour they have, which can make them stand out more afterwards if they sit at the front of your smile. If you have visible ones, tell us when booking and we will go through what you can expect.
Teeth respond differently. Age, heredity, diet, coffee, tea and smoking decide both the starting point and how far one treatment goes. Some teeth are simply slow to whiten and need more than one treatment to get where you want. Extra treatments are not included in the price.

Preparation
Before your treatment
The preparation is simple, but the first hours afterwards decide how long the result lasts.
- Come with freshly brushed teeth, the gel needs clean enamel to make proper contact
- Have something light to eat beforehand, you should wait a while before eating afterwards
- The first hour after the treatment: plain water only, nothing else
- For the following 48 hours avoid everything that stains, meaning coffee, tea, red wine, cola, soy sauce, curry, beetroot and tobacco. The teeth restore their moisture balance over those days and are then at their most receptive to new discolouration
- Light sensitivity during the first day is normal and passes on its own
- If you already have sensitive teeth, use toothpaste for sensitive teeth in the week beforehand
- We do not whiten during pregnancy, breastfeeding, chemotherapy or under the age of 18, nor if you have untreated cavities or an ongoing root canal treatment
- Crowns, veneers and fillings are not whitened, do tell us when booking if you have visible ones among your front teeth
How long it lasts is decided by you, not by the treatment. Oral hygiene, diet, smoking and snus govern everything. With moderation in coffee and tobacco the result usually lasts one to three years.
